Valhalla Missile Silo
This is the trip that many of us have been waiting the entire year for. On This November, we'll take a trip out to the Abilene area, just short of a four hour drive, which puts you at a historic decommissioned Atlas missile silo. Over a hundred feet deep and a somewhat chilly 58 to 62 degree water will surely put the memory of a hot Texas summer behind us. There is plenty of room top-side so, that's where most of us will be camping. For an extra fee, there are a few beds down inside the silo itself in a common room.
We have the silo all to ourselves for the entire weekend. Come out Friday after 5:00 PM, but no later than 8:30 PM, or Saturday after 8:00 AM, and dive until you're ready to leave on Sunday by 3:00 PM. Dive as much as you want. There are air fills available on site.
Once we get closer to the event, we can get together and talk about meals and other arrangements.
Diving, camping, history, and hanging out with our fellow divers. What more could you ask for?
Note: There are a LOT of stairs from the surface down to the staging/changing area. And more stairs from there down to the water.
Recommended Training for Advanced &
Unique Dive Environments
Some dive environments demand more than basic experience—they reward divers who understand depth, darkness, and planning beyond sea level.
To support advanced local diving and our upcoming Valhalla Missile Silo trip, Tom’s Dive & Swim and the Austin Aquanauts are offering three key SSI specialty courses that build confidence, judgment, and capability in very different—but often overlapping—conditions.
Deep Diving
Learn how to plan and execute deeper dives safely, manage gas, and understand the physiological considerations that come with depth.
This course is offered regularly throughout the year.
Night & Limited Visibility
Develop comfort, communication skills, and situational awareness when natural light is reduced. Ideal for night dives, overhead‑influenced environments, and low‑visibility conditions.
This course is also offered frequently.
Altitude Diving — Special Offering
Altitude diving changes how pressure, nitrogen loading, and dive planning work—even at inland sites that don’t feel extreme. This knowledge‑based specialty focuses on correct planning and dive‑computer use for dives above sea level, including sites like Balmorhea State Park and the Valhalla Missile Silo.
⚠️ Important:
The SSI Altitude Diving Specialty is offered only once this season — on September 12th — specifically to support the Valhalla Missile Silo trip. There are no additional Altitude classes scheduled at this time.
While Deep Diving and Night & Limited Visibility are offered regularly, Altitude Diving is the one course with limited availability and is strongly recommended for Valhalla participants.

Address: 8470 US-277, Wingate, TX 79566
Because there have been challenges with the above address, particularly when used in Apple Maps, we also offer the below GPS coordinates for the facility entrance off of Hwy 277. Take the right gate when pulling off of Hwy 277. We hope to have the big red Aquanauts Dive Flag by the gates.
