Megalodon and Shark tooth Dive

Venice, Florida
August 17-18, 2024
New Dates Added

It is finally here!  Our Megalodon and Shark Tooth Expedition!  After this year's Shark Ecology Course in July, join our instructor and trip captain Dave Harrah on an exciting trip to Florida in search of fossilized shark teeth, including megalodon teeth!

We have two days of diving planned.  Each day, a boat of 8 divers travels out to a dive area known to have fossils that are easily discovered and collected by divers.  This is a shallow water event (less than 40 feet) so it is appropriate for all levels of divers and ages.  Please note, because of the sandy bottom and shallow water, visibility may be limited to 20'-25'.

Our dive operator for this event has years of experience and our dive captain, Dave, has had great success in his collection of fossils.

Yes, this is Dave's collection from his last trip!  Can you spot the Megalodon Teeth?  There is a Mako tooth in this picture, as well.

There is limited space available for this trip. Sign up for Saturday, Sunday, or both days!  (To sign-up for both days, you will need to click on each of the links, below, which will require you to pay separately for each day.)

Click Here to register for Saturday, August 17, 2024.

Click Here to register for Sunday, August 18, 2024.

Please note that we are using a new booking system for this trip.  Please use the links above to register for this trip.  Should you have questions, contact the shop, Dave Harrah, or Scott Parker.  Our contact information is below.)

Event Details

This trip allows you the flexibility to choose your own mode of travel and length of stay.  The boat leaves out of Venice, Florida, south of Tampa.  Here are some important details.  Contact information is included below in case you have further questions.

Trip Meeting:  We will have a trip meeting on July 20, 2024, starting at 5:00p.  We’ll be doing this meeting immediately after this year’s Shark Ecology Course. We will notify you of the venue information once the reservations are finalized.  Depending on demand, we may offer a remote link or an alternate meeting date to discuss details.

Scuba Trip Location:  Venice, Florida

Travel Details:  This is a "BYOT" (Book Your Own Travel) event.  This allows you the flexibility to choose your own hotel, mode of travel, and itinerary around your diving event.

Scuba Trip Departure Point:  Venice Fisherman’s Wharf, Slips #2 or #3, 509 North Tamiami Trail, Venice, Florida 34285

Scuba Trip Departure Time:  Plan on meeting at the wharf at 7:00a the day of your scheduled dive.

Scuba Dive Profile / Expectations:  Two-tank boat dives in less than 40' of salt water in the Gulf of Mexico.  The limit will be 75 minutes or a minimum of 700 psi in your tank.  These dives are conducted in areas where there is minimal reef formation over a sandy bottom.  Visibility is variable but will be limited to 20-25'.  All divers will dive in buddy teams as there is no independent diving on this trip.

Scuba Equipment Provided:  Tanks, weights, and reusable collection bags will be provided at the departure point.  All other equipment must be brought to the boat.

Rental Equipment:  Tom's Dive & Swim is offering 50% rental for this trip.  If you are not wanting to travel with equipment from Austin, rental gear is available but must be picked up the day prior to the day at any of the dive shops in Venice, Florida.  We recommend using Venice Dive Center which is located about 20 minutes from the departure point.  Again, should you elect to travel without gear, you will need to get the gear the day prior to your dive.

Recommended Equipment:  Along with the required mask, fins, snorkel, tanks (provided at the boat), weights (provided at the boat), BCD, regulator, and computer, we recommend all divers have gloves, a dive computer, a Deployable Surface Marker Buoy (D-SMB with spool), and a dive tool.

Permits, Legal Requirements, and Subject Matter Expertise:   The boat operator provides the necessary guidance, necessary documentation, and support to ensure compliance with all State of Florida and U.S. Fish and Wildlife regulations for collecting fossils.  A fossil expert is also onboard to help educate the group, identify fossils recovered, and to assure the best experience for our club members!
