In coordination with Tom’s Dive & Swim and Scuba Schools International (SSI), the Austin Aquanauts are offering the SSI Boat Diving Specialty at a special reduced price for a limited time.

Enrollment is limited to 12 participants, so early registration is encouraged.

Why the Special Pricing?

The SSI Boat Diving Specialty requires two (2) open water boat dives to complete certification. Because these dives must be conducted from a boat—and therefore involve additional logistics—we’ve reduced the course price to help offset that requirement.

The boat dives themselves are a separate cost, paid directly by the divers at the time of the dives. This approach keeps the course accessible while allowing flexibility in how and when those dives are completed.

Completing Your Boat Dives

The preferred and most fun option is to complete your certification dives during the July 26th Boat, Bubbles, and Burgers Event. This event provides an excellent real‑world training environment and a great Aquanauts experience.

If you are unable to attend the July 26th event, a separate charter dive on Lake Travis will be arranged to complete the required dives.

Either way, you’ll receive the same instruction, supervision, and certification outcome.

About the Course

Many of the world’s best dive sites can only be accessed by boat. The SSI Boat Diving Specialty teaches you how to dive safely, comfortably, and confidently from a variety of boats—from small personal craft to larger charter and liveaboard vessels.

During this course, you’ll learn:

Boat diving procedures and etiquette
Gear setup, staging, and storage on boats
Safe entries and exits
Surface and crew communication
Planning dives in boat‑based environments

This training is ideal for divers who want to travel, join charter dives, or simply feel more confident when diving away from shore.

Upon completion, you’ll earn your SSI Boat Diving Specialty certification, which also counts toward SSI Specialty Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, and Master Diver recognition levels.

Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent) required
Two open water boat dives required for certification
Boat dives are an additional cost and not included in the course fee

July 26th Boat Dive & Burgers on Lake Travis

Boat. Bubbles. Burgers.

Join the Austin Aquanauts for our annual boat fun dive and meal on Lake Travis. We will be diving our old friend, Starnes Island, followed by lunch on the boat.

Enjoy this part of the lake that we seldom dive. This site provides us the opportunity to explore and treasure hunt as this is a popular spot for party boats. On three sides of the island, there is a gentle slope, on the fourth, there is a near vertical wall to enjoy.

The Experience

The morning begins with a boat ride out to Starnes Island for a relaxed summer dive. After the dive, lunch will be served on the boat—burgers, hot dogs, vegetarian/vegan options, and sides.

We will be wrapped up and returning to the dock by noon.

Tentative Schedule

8:00 AM – Arrive at the Just For Fun dock

• Please be prepared to get on the boat with all dive gear

8:30 AM – Depart dock

• Approx. 30‑minute ride
• Assemble gear prior to departure...to make certain we have everything!

9:15 AM – Dive at Starnes Island

10:45 AM – All divers back on board

• Lunch is served on the boat

• Slide and pool decks are open for swimming

11:30 AM – Return to dock and offload gear around noon

Capacity & Attendance

Maximum capacity: 45 people
Diver limit: 35 divers
Non‑diving family members are welcome

Limiting the number of divers ensures plenty of room on the boat and a relaxed, enjoyable experience for everyone.

Diving Support & Preparation

Dive guides will be on board, making this a great option for newer or less‑experienced boat divers.
A Boat Diving Certification class will be offered on 7/19/26 for anyone looking to build additional confidence before the event.

As always, divers are responsible for planning and executing their own dives, with dive support available if needed.

Food, Drinks & BYOB

Lunch is included: burgers, hot dogs, vegetarian/vegan options, and sides
Water and lemonade will be available throughout the morning

Mammoth Lake Texas

One of our favorite Texas lake dives is Mammoth Lake. An over 60 acres of lake with tons to see. We have dove there many times and have yet to see it all. There are training platforms, buses, train cars, a fire ladder truck with its ladder extended to the surface, a metal mammoth sculpture made from a cement mixer barrel, "boat-henge" (one of our favorites) and a full C130 cargo plane that you can swim through (a crowd favorite), and much much more. One of the great things about diving here is the underwater lines with brass markers stating what's at the end of the lines. So, easy to get around.

Mammoth Lake Texas is a freshwater lake that is completely natural. The visibility will vary depending on where you are in the lake, the depth, and the time of year you are diving. Visibility is affected by weather (temperature, wind, rain, and sunlight). Lake visibility ranges from 5' to 45' throughout the year.

We will have a grill out and will serve lunch, drinks and snacks. Please let me know if you have any particular dietary restrictions.

Please sign up early so we know how much food to bring.

What to bring:

Your SCUBA certification card.
All your scuba gear and tanks. The Mammoth Lake Texas may have some rental gear in a pinch but, it's better that you bring everything that you'll need.
Camp/lawn chairs. We already have a good number of people signed up so, we'll run out of picnic table space quick. Bring something else to sit on.
Extra shade if you have it. An extra popup canopy or two would be a good thing to help keep everyone cool.
Ground tarps to keep your gear clean(er). We'll have a lot of tarp space available but, we could run out.
Also, the unofficial Texas State Bird (mosquito) in this area is amazingly large and equally aggressive. Bug spray is a must.

The Scuba Ranch Dive (10/10/2026)

Formerly Clear Springs Scuba Park

Come join us in visiting The Scuba Ranch in north Texas. Located just east of Dallas near Terrell, on 22 acres, it's about a 3 1/2 hour drive from Austin. This is a spring fed quarry that has multiple wrecks, a Cessna airplane, and the largest fresh water shark in Texas for our underwater adventurers. Though this is an inland lake, with their usual visibility expectations, The Scuba Ranch has been known to have up to 25 foot of visibility at times. Wait until we brief you on the fresh water jellyfish sometimes seen in the shallows of this lake. (Don't worry, they don't sting...which makes them even better!)

We will be bring the grill with hamburgers and hot-dogs for lunch. There are vegetarian offerings, as well. We'll also be providing plenty of water and lemonade to keep us hydrated. Bring your own reusable cup if you'd like to be a little more environmentally friendly.

Your entry fee includes lunch as well as entry into The Scuba Ranch. When you arrive and check in, just tell them that you are with the Austin Aquanauts and they'll verify you've already paid.

We're really looking forward to this event.

CARVING CONTEST

AND FUN DIVE

Show off your pumpkin carving talent at this years Austin Aquanauts Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest. Or, just come out and have a fun dive and watch the festivities.

The contest rules are simple.

Bring your own pumpkin.
Only one pumpkin used per judged entry. We're not building Frankenstein here.
You must use a blunt tipped diving knife for carving. No specialty tools or pointed dive knives. Consider a lanyard on your knife so it does not become lost if dropped. Allowing your pumpkin to carve you with your own dive knife is considered poor form.
No markings of any kind on the pumpkins before they go underwater. The horror begins below.
Pumpkins are very buoyant. Please take that into consideration when planning your dive weights. Consider a bag with weight for your pumpkin.
One small hole, no bigger that 2" in diameter, may be cut into the pumpkin to assist with submersion of the pumpkin.
Once initially submerged, any pumpkin that touches the surface is considered complete and must be presented for judging. Whether it is actually complete or not.
Pumpkins arriving on the surface without their divers will be considered rogue fast moving zombie pumpkins and not eligible for judging. If you are making a zombie pumpkin, it must be of the slow moving variety that ascends at 30 feet per minute with their divers. This goes for pumpkins of the non-zombie variety as well.

We'll have great prizes for the Best Pumpkin, Spookiest Pumpkin, and "Oh, Good Try".

We'll provide drinks and snacks as well. We're not sure what the food will be yet though.
